Watch Me Grow Series

Excerpts From An Interview About How “The Watch Me Grow” Series Was Made

INTERVIEWER: When I asked Ruth White how she got the idea for the Tom Thumb® WATCH ME GROW® series, she said:

Ruth White: I wanted to develop a program that had a large scope with a systematic approach to learning. At the same time, it had to be fun. The WATCH ME GROW® idea was the beginning of a new “edutainment” series along these lines.

INTERVIEWER: Can you be more specific?

Ruth White: We began by tracking children’s growth and development, and behavior changes month by month, and period by period. From this information, we could identify a readiness to learn skills for each age. Next, we considered what we could teach best through music and sound. We selected these areas to create songs, stories, and games for them. It wasn’t like, “I have an idea for a song”, but it was “Now we need a song to teach this skill.”

INTERVIEWER: Was this approach successful?

Ruth White: Very much so! Children love the WATCH ME GROW® activities because they are always appropriate for their age level, whether it’s learning to hold a spoon, hopping, learning the alphabet, or remembering long lists of silly words. And children love learning through music and games. It works well for parents too, because the guide provides a map with important information about what to generally expect for this age. With this kind of information, they can support their child’s learning and understand behavior changes to build stronger relationships.
